Robert D. Hillman Jr, 88, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2023. He was born in Harmony, PA, in 1935. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Oriskany aircraft carrier during the Korean war. He was an avid Browns, Ohio State and Akron University football fan, and enjoyed boating, fishing and golfing with his firefighter buddies of many years, especially the annual golf trips to Groundhog Mountain. His number one love was the Akron Fire Department for which he served 30 years, retiring as Lieutenant, and he always said it was the “greatest job in the world.”
Robert was preceded in death by his sister Betty Thornburg and her husband Eugene, brother, Keith Hillman, and infant great-granddaughter Eleanor Elsass. He survived by his wife of 33 years, Sandra; his three children Judi Hillman, Robert Hillman and Cris Welch (Dave); his step children Charles Wagner (Carol), Jerry Wagner, Pam Buehrle (Ken) and Daryl Wagner; grandchildren Breanna Scarpitti (Tony), David Welch (Savanah) and Melissa Elsass (Keith), Michael Wagner (Abbey), Curtis Wagner (Corrie), Rachel Mellinger (Dylan), Kevin Buehrle (Jennifer), Samantha Buehrle (Matt) and Rebekka Wagner; great-grandchildren Leighton, Dawson, Jackson, Henry, Luke, Miles and Evelyn; sister-in-law Karen Hillman; many nieces and nephews and special friends.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, November 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. at House of Eberhardt Funeral Home, 472 W Turkeyfoot Lk. Rd. (Rt. 619) Portage Lakes. Akron Firefighters’ Last Alarm service will be held at 5:45 pm.
Inurnment with full Navy military honors will be held on Thursday, November 16 at 9:45 a.m. at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Rittman, Ohio 44273-9750
